Parker: The style of the 2018 La Paul, from a vineyard in the actual village of Laguardia, was very different from the 2017 I tasted next to it. 2018 was a cooler year, and within the riper and lush character of this plot compared with the rest of reds from Pujanza, this has lower alcohol and more freshness than the 2017. Furthermore, the élevage in French barrique was shortened to 12 months (from 17 in 2017), and the wine shows a lot more integrated. After the aging in wood, the wine was kept in concrete for eight months before it was bottled. While the 2017 was earthy and rustic, this is velvety and elegant. The character of the vintages are completely different, but the change in the élevage also means less extraction for the oak, because the élevage is shorter and the wine has less alcohol and therefore extracts less from the wood. With time in the glass, the nose exploded into flowers and herbs, making it more aromatic and showing the elegance that was immediately obvious in the palate. 10,000 bottles produced.
